Here are the updated standings going into the Divisional Round:

Well, it is end of an era in our pickems. I, Glenn Moore, lost my first place standing to Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez after I finished 0-4 last week. So now, it’s a three-way fight for the top spot with only a few games left in the season. Perez is in first place with a winning percentage of .679 (163-77), but I am a close second at .675 (172-83). American Ninja Warrior host Matt Iseman is in third place at .667 (170-85), but only a couple games behind the leaders. Michelle Beadle of ESPN sits in fourth at .642 (154-86). Our guest pickers are in fifth with a winning percentage of .635 (162-93).

Dear Alabama,

I still don’t believe your team deserved to play for the crystal ball over Oklahoma State, but the positive-minded man that I am has found something about the LSU-Alabama rematch for which to be thankful.

I know Rammer Jammer Nation will surely argue that their team’s dominant (yes, I certainly admit that it was a one-sided evening) win in the BCS Championship game is evidence enough that they belonged in the game. While I agree that they won convincingly, that win only proved that they performed well enough in that game, not that it performed well enough to deserve to play in it.

However, this game, and your win, did a wonderful job of shining the spotlight on a flawed system. It leaves two teams with identical records in the loss column and a tied head-to-head match-up, each having won in the opponent’s home state (although only LSU having won in the in the opponent’s home stadium). Alabama brings home the crystal ball simply for having won last — not most. LSU had one more win and a much more impressive resume than its opponent as it walked out of the stadium, however will be without a title simply because it was required to beat a lower-ranked team twice while only having to lose to them once.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban celebrates after winning Monday.

I thank you for that.

I thank you because while there have been several years in which the call for change seemed loud and obvious, I don’t see one any louder or more obvious than this one.

The ridiculousness of this rematch and the system which allowed — or rather, caused — it, surely will lead to changes to the way a champion and championship contenders are determined.

One needs to look no further than the final human polls (2/3 of the BCS formula) to see the system’s ridiculousness. One can look at how each coach voted in the Coaches Poll (1/3 of the BCS formula) which makes it easy to see that it’s a broken system. Four coaches had Oklahoma State ranked fourth and one coach had them ranked fifth. A team that has a logical argument to be ranked second, is ranked fourth and fifth? One coach who ranked them fourth admitted earlier this season that he doesn’t watch very many other teams around the country play and had a big stake in where Oklahoma State fell — Nick Saban. Do we still think the human voters are taking the ranking of teams seriously? One coach didn’t rank Georgia, SEC East Champion and 10-3, in the Top 25 at all and one had them ranked as high as seventh! Four coaches had Arkansas State in the Top 25.

There’s a reason why the AP removed itself from the BCS formula in 2005: it didn’t want to be associated with such a terrible system. A system which goes out of it’s way to have six computers rank teams free from emotion or bias and even removes the highest and lowest rankings of those six computers in an attempt at fairness, gives human voters 66% control of where teams are ranked. 33% of the BCS formula come from votes cast by coaches who don’t have the time or inclination to become informed about teams outside of their realm of interest. I don’t think any of us really understand the Harris Poll.

However, change is coming. I know it.

I thank you for that.

I don’t know when or exactly what the changes will be, but I foresee at least one, if not several, of the following changes in the future:

1. A playoff system of some kind to determine a champion. The FBS is the only level of college football that is without one and is the only major sport that doesn’t have one.
2. Removal of bowl allegiances to specific conferences allowing bowls to choose from the best teams overall rather than being limited to conferences.
3. Removal of the automatic qualifying system. This has been considered for a while, and I think it’s time to happen. It’s time to stop these conference biases and let teams that have great records, regardless of conference, have an opportunity to be rewarded for it. It’s easy to mock them, if you don’t have to play them.
4. Changes to the BCS Bowl selection protocol. Firstly, let’s remove the two teams per conference rule. Arkansas was punished for having a great season in a division that had a great year just because there is a rule that only two teams per conference can play in a BCS bowl game. Furthermore, there will be changes to the way at-large selections are made. There’s no logical explanation why Virginia Tech or Michigan played in the Sugar Bowl over Boise State, Kansas State, and Baylor outside of money. Fairness was clearly not a consideration, nor was ranking.
5. Removal or change in the BCS formula. At the very least, we have to either remove or drastically change the Coaches Poll. Coaches don’t seriously evaluate enough teams to fairly assess the top 25 teams, nor do they have the time to do so. Additionally, they are naturally biased voters. What good do the impartial computers do for the system if the results of their rankings can be so easily overridden by a human majority?

(I’d love for there to be a change to the number of bowl games we have, but given that this is a money-driven business, I don’t see it. With 35 bowls, mediocre teams are being rewarded for being mediocre. Teams that have won the same amount of games as they lost get rewarded. This year, a team (UCLA) that lost more games than it lost, got rewarded. I think we need to reduce the number of bowls significantly and raise the bar of bowl eligibility. Yes, I’m aware my Buckeyes were 6-6 and played in a bowl this season, and that’s a prime reason for me to feel this way. They did nothing to deserve being rewarded despite fighting through a suspension-riddled season. I realize we live in an age in which participation trophies are given out like Halloween candies, but there shouldn’t be participation bowls and that’s where we’re leaning when we let 70 of 120 teams play in them.)

I know the BCS committee is meeting this week and I’m sure they are considering these changes. Yes, they meet every year and discuss changes. However, this BCS bowl season was a disaster. One could make the argument that at least four teams were given unfair circumstances and three teams were given undeserved opportunities. LSU, Oklahoma State, Arkansas and any two of the three aforementioned teams that were excluded from the Sugar Bowl belong in the former category, while Alabama, Virginia Tech, and Michigan in the latter.

So I congratulate you, Alabama, on another Tidal title (hmmm, I should trademark that!) and on a terrific game on 1/9/12. It was the first BCS bowl game shutout. You are the first team to win a national championship without winning your conference since Minnesota did it in 1936. You should be proud of yourself, not only for being champions for the second time in three seasons, but for also being a big reason change is coming.

Thank you!

Sincerely,
Christopher R. Williams — A Passionate College Football Fan

In this episode, we talked about former Cavs coach Mike Brown getting the Los Angeles Lakers job and whether Brown was let go from the Cavaliers in effort to keep LeBron James and if Brown would have stayed if Cavs knew James was leaving.

On Mike Brown hiring in LA:
“I was a little surprised because I haven’t really heard his name that much. As far as him being a great candidate for the job, no, that didn’t surprise me by him getting picked. Because playing for him, I got to see what kind of a great coach he was and more-so a people person. And I think he will do a great job out there with that veteran ball club.”

We also discussed this comment from James after his Miami Heat defeated the Chicago Bulls this week: “I wanted to team up with some guys that would never die down in the moment. The opportunity presented itself with this great organization and we made it happen.”

On LeBron’s comments:
“The way it’s said, you can’t help but take it personal. I would prefer to talk to him personally and say, ”Exactly what did you mean when you said this comment? What point were you trying to make?”…I take comments like that and when you speak out and you feel the need for everybody to hear what you are saying, it’s kind of like admission. By you saying that, I don’t think great players should feel the need to say this about a team or say that about a team. I think what it all boils down to if you’re great, you go play great, be great and everybody will realize you’re great. And you wouldn’t have to let it be known that everybody else was less great. Great players shouldn’t have to do that. So I feel like it’s kind of an admission. He might have needed some help. He might have needed to go somewhere and find someone who is a little greater so maybe he wouldn’t die down in those moments.”

He also talked about what happened last year in the playoffs against the Boston Celtics and the rumors of LeBron’s mother, Gloria James and Delonte West.

His view on what happened last year in playoffs:
“I didnt see anything different happen behind the scenes. There wasn’t an altercation in the locker room. And all the speculation about his mom (Gloria James) and my teammate (Delonte West), I think that is just bull. I don’t think anybody should ever say anything like that. Disrespectful to his mother. On the flip side of all that, once again, in the situation like that, we got beat. So, I feel like a great player would do or what a player whose deteremind to be that would just say okay we got beat, I gotta do better. Simple as that. Everybody on the team should take accountability for what happened and figure it out and move forward. It’s not about pointing a finger that way, pointing a finger that way, the finger should always be pointed at yourself, what could I have done better.”

And he also answered the question burning in Cavs fans minds since last year.

Did LeBron quit during the Boston series:
“A lot of it is speculation. Nobody knows. But me being a player and on the team, I didn’t feel like he quit. I just feel like they beat us. We lost that series, point blank. They out-played us and they won the game.”

Later on in the podcast, we talked about the NBA Finals and his pick to win. And also how the big gap between games could hurt a hot team, like the Mavericks. And finally, discussed Russell Westbrook walking off the court without shaking hands with the Mavs.

When you put one of the most out-spoken closers in MLB and a WWE Hall of Famer together for a Q & A, it’s priceless. But to get it on video, it’s classic. And this is #4 on “DSS Most Viewed Posts of 2011″.

Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez and I had a whole series of videos during the season called “:60 Seconds with Pure Rage”. From interviews to stories to broadcasts, I will recap what made DSS a success in 2011 and a staple in the Cleveland sports media.
In March, Joe Haden became one of the most popular people in Cleveland. And all he had to do was come to Cleveland Cavaliers’ games dressed in full uniform. I had the chance to speak with Haden as he was dressed head to toe as Cavaliers center Anderson Varejao. This is #5 on “DSS Most Viewed Posts of 2011″.
(View the post)

I talked with Joe on why this is the new thing to do for him and who would he take in the draft if he had the power. He also hinted on who he would dress up as next at a Cavs game.

On why he is embracing Cleveland like this:
“It’s for the love of the fans, the way they come to support us. Even though we don’t come out on top all the time, they still come out to support us.”

Who would he pick with the 6th pick in the NFL draft:
“I would either pick Patrick Peterson or A.J. Green if they were still there.”

It’s really refreshing to see a professional athlete that is not from the area embrace the city and the fans they way Haden has. During the game, even though he was on a date, he was eager to take pictures with fans and sign autographs. We can only hope players from other Cleveland sports teams do the same for Haden when he hopefully steps on the field in the fall. Who knows, we might see Haden on the court next season if he isn’t playing football.

Now this was AWESOME! I’ve met a ton of athletes and celebrities, but none like Cleveland native and WWE Superstar “The Miz”. I had the chance to speak with him at a Cleveland Indians game in July as he was in town to throw out the first pitch. While the first pitch was a strike down the middle, the interview was a home run. And this is #6 on “DSS Most Viewed Posts of 2011″.

We discussed everything from throwing out the first pitch to his favorite all-time Cleveland sports stars. We also hit on who he would like to take face in the ring that he hasn’t taken on before, which was “The Rock”.

Below is video of his first pitch before the Indians-LA Angels game.
And to celebrate the accomplishments of 2011, I’m putting together a list of the Top 11 Most Viewed Posts on DSS. From interviews to stories to broadcasts, I will recap what made DSS a success in 2011 and a staple in the Cleveland sports media. (Check out #11, #10, #9, and #8 on our list)

It takes a perfect storm for “radio gold” to take place. And that is exactly what happened on October 27th, 2011 on DSS. Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez has a show right here on DSS called “30 Minutes with Pure Rage” and he had Jay Crawford from ESPN on this particular episode. And this is #7 on “DSS Most Viewed Posts of 2011″.

(View the post)

Jay first talked about the Indians season and how he likes the Tribe’s chances for next season if they can carry the momentum of a fast start, which the squad will have one more year of experience under their belt. Then things started to get good.

Perez and Crawford then started talking about the game of baseball on a deeper level. Ranging from the mentality of a closer to what baseball does to a father and son relationship. Crawford then started to discuss working for ESPN and with Skip Bayless. And even discussed working with former Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini.

Crawford on Eric Mangini

Or download as an MP3

He then went out to discuss where he was and how he felt when the Indians lost the 1997 World Series to the Florida Marlins. Strangely enough, this interview took place on the 14 year anniversary of Game 7, in which the Indians lost in Florida. He goes on in detail about how he saw the champion hats and shirts being wheeled into the clubhouse, only to be whisked away moments later when the Marlins tied up the game.

And to celebrate the accomplishments of 2011, I’m putting together a list of the Top 11 Most Viewed Posts on DSS. From interviews to stories to broadcasts, I will recap what made DSS a success in 2011 and a staple in the Cleveland sports media. (Check out #11, #10, and #9 on our list)

What do a WWE Hall of Famer, ESPN personality, TV star, and the closer for the Cleveland Indians all have in common? They were a part of the DSS Celebrity Weekly NFL Pickems of course! And that is #8 on our list of “DSS Most Viewed Posts of 2011″.

With Jerry “The King” Lawler, Michelle Beadle, Matt Iseman, and Chris Perez, I was very fortunate to bring all of these awesome people together each week during the NFL season to pick winners and talk a little trash. While nothing was at stake, other than bragging rights, it was fun to give readers what these sports personalities were thinking that week in the NFL.

And with our ever-changing weekly guest celebrity picker, it gave you the reader a chance to compete against these great people. And while the Twitter trash-talk commenced, the laughs were common throughout the week.

We even had some celebrities take part in being our guest picker, including WWE Superstar The Miz, fantasy football guru Nathan Zegura, and Comcast SportsNet Lindsay McCormick.

You can check out the results from each week here!

Really? Really? Other media outlets, including national, would look to me here at DSS for a Cleveland perspective on certain sports stories? Yes, in 2011, I made numerous appearances on radio and TV and those are #9 in our countdown of “DSS Most Viewed Posts of 2011″.

From SportsTime Ohio to Yahoo! Sports Radio to 92.3 The Fan here in Cleveland, I talked about everything from Jim Thome coming to Cleveland (more on that later in the countdown) to the Jim Tressel scandal to the Cleveland Indians fast start.

A big thank you to those media outlets for letting me come on their programs to represent Cleveland on a big stage. I hope I made Cleveland proud giving the city some love.

I love high school football. For most of these kids, this is their last stop of playing organized football. And for some, you have the chance to see some top-notch prospects before they are able to play on Saturday afternoons in college. DSS broadcasted nine games throughout the 2011 high school football season, and those are #10 in the “DSS Most Viewed Posts of 2011″.

(You can listen to every DSS high school football broadcast on the archive page.)

Mentor, Solon, St. Ignatius, Aurora, Shaker Heights, University, Eastlake North, St. Xavier, Centerville, West Geauga and Walsh Jesuit were the teams that gave us some great games. From early in the football season to some great playoff matchups, DSS gave listeners another outlet to experience Friday night lights.

Our broadcast of the Mentor-St. Ignatius playoff matchup in November had over 10,000 listeners, including a chat room that was too fast to read live on the air. We thank all of our high school football listeners for the support and I want to give a special thank you to my broadcast partner Andy Sefcik, who was the play-by-play man for most of the games. It was a honor to work with a professional and I look forward to broadcasting more high school football games in 2012.

Daryl Ruiter and I on DSS.

DSS has had many co-hosts. From Gary “The Numbers Guy” to Daniel Brock to Tony Mazur, unique, opinionated voices have graced the internet airwaves. And 2011 was no different as #11 on the countdown is “DSS Repackaged With New Voices”.

I was very excited to bring Ashleigh Ignelzi on-board earlier in the year for the weekly show on Saturdays, broadcasting live on the Digital Sports Network on cleveland.com. While we didn’t broadcast many shows together, the chemistry was there. We enjoyed our three-hour show and the fans of DSS loved what they heard (and saw) from Ashleigh. It marked the first time a female voice made it’s way full-time on DSS and I have to say, working with her was awesome.

Then in June, I had to reinvent DSS once again. With Ashleigh living in Columbus and not able to drive up every Saturday to do a show, I had to look for a new co-host. With DSN no more, it was a no-brainer to have long-time sportscaster Daryl Ruiter as my new co-host. Daryl and I enjoyed a nice run of great shows in a brand new studio. From great guests and the humorous banter between us, it was a thrill to learn and talk sports with such a pro.

(Listen to some of the great shows with Daryl as co-host here, here, and here.)

And finally, I had a couple co-hosts during my time with DSN that are worth mentioning. Three to be exact. First, was WMMS radio personality Chad Zumock. He brought a funny twist to the sports talk. Then was New York Daily News New York Knicks beat writer Frank Isola and finally, good friend of DSS over at StepienRules.com, Brendan Bowers.

It was also great to let the DSS listeners voice their opinions of the show and topics in our chat rooms and call-in line. You the listeners/readers made the shows fun and I am grateful to each and everyone of you!
