“The Dugout Sports Show” made their way out to New York City to cover the 2K Sports Classic : Coaches vs. Cancer tournament at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 19-20, 2009. The video below shows footage of my time in NYC, along with some videos of behind the scenes at MSG. The games played where Ohio State vs. North Carolina, California vs. Syracuse, Ohio State vs. California, and the final between North Carolina vs. Syracuse.
I got to meet Dick Vitale and Bobby Knight, which was an awesome experience. Vitale was very nice and even chatted with me for a few minutes before tip off.

The Ohio State State Buckeyes mens’ basketball team rebounded from their loss two days ago with a much deserved win over 12th ranked California 76 – 70, in the 2K Sports Classic : Coaches vs. Cancer consolation game at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The 15th ranked Buckeyes were in control from the opening tip and managed to lead the Golden Bears by as much as 24 points. But being one of the nation’s best 3 point shooting teams, Cal crawled their way back into the ball game and played the last 6:39 only down within single digits.
Jon Diebler got the Buckeyes on the right track by knocking down Ohio States first three pointer only two minutes into the ballgame. The night before against North Carolina, Ohio State missed their first nine three pointers and never recovered even though coming within two points of the defending national champions. The Buckeyes shot 46% from 3 point range in the first half, including shooting 48% overall. Consistent defense in the first half was also a big key with Dallas Lauderdale leading the defensive charge with four blocks as Ohio State went into halftime up 38 – 25.
California only shot 35% from the field in the first half, but hitting 5 of 10 3 point shots kept them within striking distance at the half. No lead is safe with the Golden Bears, as they came back in the second half and put some pressure on the Buckeyes.
The Buckeyes continued their momentum into the second half by taking a 24 point lead with a William Buford dunk at the 15:40 mark. Even though the Golden Bears were outshot percentage wise, 55% to 41% in the second half, they still managed to cut the big lead down and outscore the Buckeyes in the second half, 45 – 38. Cal’s Jerome Randle led the charge with 20 of his 26 points coming in the second half.
The most important stat of the night for the Buckeyes was Evan Turner only turning the ball over 4 times. Against North Carolina, he turned it over 10 times. He led the Buckeyes with 26 points, including 14 rebounds. He has managed to have a double-double in each of the Buckeyes first four games this year.
Both these teams combined for 41 3 point attempts in their first game respectively on Thursday. The trend continued last night as they combined for 48 attempts. Dieblers 9 of his 14 points came on the three ball and helped the Buckeyes stretch their lead throughout the game. Randle for Cal had six of the Golden Bears 10 3 pointers.
The Buckeyes leave New York City on a good note against one of the toughest teams in the nation
and also the favorite to win the Pac-10 in Cal. The loss to North Carolina hurt but the comeback they had against the Tar Heels carried over to their win over Cal. Next up, the Buckeyes play at home on Tuesday against Lipscomb.

It could have been the bright lights of New York City. It could have been the history of Madison Square Garden. Or it could have been just the fact that the Ohio State Buckeyes were outplayed, outhustled, and outshot by the defending NCAA National Champions, North Carolina Tar Heels in their 2K Sports Classic: Coaches vs. Cancer semifinal matchup. At least for the first 38 minutes. The 15th ranked Buckeyes, shooting just 29% from 3 point range, lost to the 6th ranked Tar Heels, 77 - 73 and will play the Golden Bears of California tonight in the consolation game.
The Buckeyes didn’t seem to be comfortable from the start, trailing by 10 early on. In both teams’ first test of the season, Ohio State didn’t score their first bucket until four minutes into the ball game on a Dallas Lauderdale dunk. North Carolina didn’t start on fire as well, but used mini spurts here and there to eventually take a 38-24 lead at the half.
At the half, North Carolina had shot 48% from the floor, while the Buckeyes struggled, shooting a lowly 29%. Going one for ten from three point land didn’t help that percentage as well.
Everytime it seemed that Ohio State was gaining momentum, North Carolina would answer with their own run. The Buckeyes never got the Tar Heels lead to single digits. That is, until the final minutes of the ballgame.
The outside shots Ohio State was missing during the game were finally falling in towards the end and they came within two points after being down by nineteen at the 10:23 mark. Jon Diebler, David Lightly, and William Buford all hit 3s down the stretch to get the Buckeyes back in the game. But Larry Drew II of North Carolina, who missed four of his previous six free throws in the final minute, then made two from the stripe with 11 seconds left for the final score.
Diebler had 17 points for Ohio State, including 3 of 10 from 3-point range, which didn’t help their overall team total of 6 of 21 from downtown. Evan Turner had a triple-double he would like to forget about. It included 23 points and 11 rebounds but also 10 of the 16 Ohio State turnovers.
“It was a rough night, obviously,” Turner said. “I’m bumped and bruised and I’ll be back tomorrow.”
But after a dismal first half, the Buckeyes can hope to build off the last 2 minutes of the game. They not only had a chance to win the game against the defending champions, but did it after being down in double digits for most of the ballgame.
“We obviously made a great comeback,” Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. “I thought the first half we couldn’t get the ball in the basket. We had some decent looks, the shots weren’t falling for us…Hopefully we learned a lesson there getting ourselves ready to go right from the start.”
The Buckeyes time in New York City and playing at Madison Square Garden doesn’t get any easier, as they will face Pac-10 favorite and 12th ranked California, who lost to Syracuse in the first game of the nights doubleheader.

The Dugout Sports Show welcomed Paul Scianna, live in studio, on our August 8th show to talk about his experience on “The Next Great Champ”, which was a reality boxing show on FOX, hosted by Oscar de la Hoya. We also discussed the amazing story of Terence Haynes, who also is a past guest on DSS. Paul trained Terence and helped him lose 200 pounds in a year. Paul runs his own fitness training company, Empowering Punch. We really enjoyed our interview with Paul and look for him to make a return to our show in the fall.
You can check out the pictures from him in studio here.
Paul stayed throughout the whole show and chimed in about certain sports topics Brock and I were discussing. You can listen to the whole show here.
Below are the two segments we really went in-depth with Paul. You can either click the play button or right click on ‘download’ then click on ’save link as’ to download the interview to your computer.

After our broadcast at “Blogs with Balls” in New York City, we here at The Dugout Sports Show have been humbled by the wide spread shout-outs and credit and “bings” we have received. Not only by our fellow bloggers and internet sports talk shows, by but mainstream media, like ESPN.
So we would like to take some time and recognize who has mentioned DSS in their blogs and give THEM a shoutout. Because without you, the listener, our show would not be here today. Yes, we have been on the air for only 6 months, but seriously, if we didn’t have you guys, none of this would be possible. So thank you.
1. First, I want to recognize the people over at Project Spurs/Spurscast. Jeff Garcia and Michael De Leon put on a awesome show every week about the Spurs and other NBA topics. But when I was in attendance at “Blogs with Balls”, they invited me to be a guest on their show. We talked about DSS, Lebron James, and the NBA Finals. So, here is the audio of my interview. It starts after the intro.
2. Then, the Spurscast had their drinkoff, as Jimmy Castro from Chronicles of Crotty and Michael De Leon from Project Spurs faced off to drink five beers, first one wins. I had the privilege to call the “play by play” of this event. Turned out to be awesome! And I will be challenging Mike at BwB 2.0 in Las Vegas!
3. Amanda Rykoff, from ESPN came on our show at “Blogs with Balls” in NYC. We talked a lot about the conference and baseball in general, including our Indians beating her Yankees in the 2007 Playoffs. But that is for another time! She was kind enough to give us a shout out on her ESPN Podcast, “Play Ball”. Check it out. But here is her “shout out”:
4. Chris Lucas, Co-Founder of Blogs with Balls and Hugging Harold Reynolds, came on our show in New York City and gave us kind words. We really appreciate the comments and also letting DSS broadcast live from the event. Here is what he said to say:
We do appreciate the support we have gotten, not only from “Blogs with Balls”, but from Day One. Everyone who listened to our show back in January when we were lucky to get 2 people to listen to our show (which turned out to be mom and dad) and have stuck with us.

While in New York City two weekends ago (for Blogs with Balls), I stumbled upon a section of the M&M World store that would make Chris, producer our show, proud. Everyone who listens to our show knows we rip on Chris for liking NASCAR and everyone knows we give a whole 5 seconds of NASCAR news a month on our show. But not only were there little NASCAR toy cars but there was an actually race day jacket for the #18 car, Kyle Busch. (Please do not ask me how I know that). So I figured to take some pictures for Chris. And this concludes our NASCAR reference for the month.
But wait, there is more. Here is a hilarious classic clip of Dale Earnhardt talking.
Be sure to listen to Chris’ show, Uncensored Net Noise, Live every Friday from 9-12 PM EST at www.morningshowcentral.com

This show has come a long way from when it first started in December of last year. We had to go through what every blog/podcast goes through when they first started up, and that is getting attention. Getting your name out there. Getting respectable guests. And most importantly, getting someone to listen!
A month into our show, I had to switch co-hosts. The transition from Gary the Numbers Guy, who did know his sports but wanted to mainly talk about numerology, to Dan Brock, who hit a home run on his first show, even though he was given two days notice. I then had to decide whether I even wanted to continue the show. I had just moved to Michigan and would be 3 hours away from the studio. But being the trooper I am, I would drive 3 hours to Cleveland every Saturday to do the show, and then 3 hours back to Michigan after the show. This lasted for about 4 months until I moved back to Cleveland.
But all of this was worth it, because we got to do a live broadcast from “Blogs with Balls” in New York City this past Saturday. It was only proper that the “Mecca of Sports-Blogging” was being held down the street from the “Mecca of Sports Entertainment”, Madison Square Garden. With a jam-packed cellar in the restaurant Stout, sports bloggers from all over the country joined and for the most part, met face to face for the first time ever. After Twittering, emailing, referencing each other’s blogs, we finally got to see the face behind the keyboard.
As soon as I stepped into the cellar, Don and Chris from HHR greeted me like I have been their friend for years. Yea, DSS is just a little ole sports talk radio show, but these guys treated me with the same respect and attention they gave Sports Illustrated, who had a booth on the other side of the wall from us. Internet, well that was another story. Kyle Bunch, who you can listen to our pre-”Blogs with Balls” interview here, donated his Verizon Wireless Wi-Fi router for us to use for our broadcast. Turned out to be just what we needed, because without it, we would have had NO broadcast.
I was unable to hear most of the panels as we were broadcasting from 12-3 and I had to make my way over to join the Project Spurs crew for their podcast. But from what I heard from other people, it was truly an success. The panels gave us an insight on how sports-blogging will change the face of sports media in the years, no, months to come. Everyone who attended walked away with new information, new friends, new goals, and new motivation to do what they love and that is talk and write about sports.
I came to this event not knowing what to expect. I was hoping at least ONE person would have recongized the name of our show and hopefully would have listened. But as the day went on, I had people come up to me and say they love the show and listen to it whenever they can, if not live, but when it becomes available to download. Was it worth coming all the way to New York City from Cleveland to do an live broadcast? Of course. Will I be at “Blogs with Balls” 2.0 in Las Vegas in October? You betcha.
But most importanly, I left this event a very humbled sports blogger.
Again, thanks to HHR to putting on such a great event. And I wish to work with everyone I met and form partnerships that last a lifetime! Also thanks to everyone who listened live to our show! Without you, we could not have made this the highest watched episode in DSS history.
You can also listen to our show from “Blogs with Balls” here.
